i love cats
that other cat? dead.
Had a super interesting course about cat care/health yesterday, God, vet school is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
@missing-merlin sorry it took me so long to reply! I got a few important points.
Cats were originally desert animals so water is very important to them and owners usually don’t give then enough access to clean fresh water, ence why most kittens suffer from kidney problems. The best way to make sure they have enough is feeding wet food and distributing a pair of water bowls per cat around the house, SPECIALLY OVERNIGHT, you can buy one of those fountains that keep the water circulating or put fresh water in the bowls before going to bed.
When talking about feeding, giving several meals a day it’s the best option or getting one of those slow feeders that offers food randomly throughout the day. Also, try to spice things up a lil to keep the cat interested, that can be easily done mixing different kinds/flavors of wet food, giving the occasional rmb or feeding barf!
Then we got a lot of information about castration, but that may not interest you? We got a list of pros and cons and such things hahaha
Oh, thank you for taking the time! :)
Water is something I’m almost paranoid about because getting her to drink from a bowl after bottle feeding her was a struggle D: at the same time I’m hoping she’ll get used to drinking from higher places because the ferret loves dragging and spilling all the water bowls so they have to be out of his reach (or tied, glued and secure to a wall like in his cage). On the plus side, she sneaks into his cage and drinks his water too.
She’s on dry and wet food right now, but I would like to stick with dry more (if there isn’t much difference between the two). It’s easier to storage and measure, it stinks less, her poo stinks less and the ferret doesn’t want to steal it (my main problem with everything is usually one noisy ferret).
Do you mean castration as in just for males or also sterilization for females? Because I’ll definitely get her fixed but there’s so much mixed info as in WHEN it’s an appropriate time to do so :/
can you reblog and tag this with where you live, your native language and the sound you make when calling cats? like what do you say to a cat when you want it to come?
one thing I never see anyone take into account is the fact that Hogwarts must be crawling with cats. you’re allowed to bring either a cat, an owl, or a toad. if we assume only 1/3 of the students bring cats with them, that’s still, like, HUNDREDS OF CATS.
#and how many of those cats were spayed or neutered??#are there rules about spaying/neutering your cat and when were those rules made if so?#do the teachers remember the ‘great kitten infestation of 65?#where they had not just hundreds of cats at hogwarts but HUNDREDS OF KITTENS#so many kittens the students come to hogwarts with a cat and come home with an armful of them#teachers are given kittens#mcgonagall walking into class carrying a kitten#kittens chasing after dumbledore’s robes in the great hall#playpens in the common rooms for kittens#kittens everywhere
WHAT IF MCGONAGALL TAUGHT MANNERS AND STUFF TO THE KITTENS AND THEY EVEN TRAINED THEM TO BE LIKE HELPERS. LIKE THEY COULD LEAD 1ST YEARS TO CLASS AND ALERT TEACHERS TO MISCHIEF OR RETRIEVE MADAME POMPFREY IN AN EMERGENCY
and students had to be careful because there was no telling which kittens were helper kittens and which ones were recruited by mrs norris

I keep Trash Bag strictly indoors because he’s perfectly capable of scaling the fence and Wonka is indoors but permitted access to our courtyard, because he can’t jump and escape.
If they’re ascertaining that outdoor access is crucial for cats’ mental health and well-being, then they are also accusing me of neglecting or abusing my cats.
They do need places to sleep, places to climb, toilet areas, food and water stations, companionship, mental stimulation, a sunbeam to snooze in and human interaction.
Access to the outside does provide toilet areas, sunbeams and mental stimulation, but that mental stimulation is often in the form of hunting wildlife, fighting with other cats and generally unacceptable levels of risk.
And we can provide all these things cats require inside. Trash Bag doesn’t want to go outside, but he does like to sit on the top of the cat tree where he can look out the window.
People like to let their cats outside because it’s what they’ve traditionally been doing, but we know now that doing so greatly increases risk to the cat and the local environment.
Aside from what the cats do, it’s important to also consider what people do to the cats. Cats get kidnapped and stolen off the street, and without a microchip end up in the pound. And people often don’t look for them for days, expecting them to just come home. People poison them with paracetamol/acetominophen dissolved in milk because they don’t like them coming into their garden. I saw three ginger cats all hit by cars in the same week from the same tiny street, and I’m sure that was deliberate. I also know a lady that picked up a (purebred) cat on the street, drove for 3 hours to our vet clinic because she refused to let local clinics scan its microchip, because she wanted to keep it and seemed to think the owner wouldn’t come claim it from so far away.
And there are so, so many cats that just Never Come Home.
I can’t stop people from letting their cats free roam, though I advise against it. I have something of a seat belt philosophy. If you’re going to drive a car, you wear a seat belt. If you’re going to let your cat outside, you make sure it’s desexed, microchipped, your microchip details are up to date, it’s vaccinated for FIV on time, wormed regularly, on flea control monthly and you go looking for it asap if it’s not home on time.
We can do better than we have done in the past.

I don’t know about your specific cat, but yes cats (like all animals with a developed mesocortex) are almost certainly capable of love. Recent MRIs of dogs showed very similar neural activity in response to seeing ‘their person’ as humans experience when seeing someone they love, and cats share all of the same brain structures. If your cat is always hanging out around/on you, and wants your attention, and pets, and to play with you, and purrs when you visit them and when you cuddle up together, then yes, I expect your cat loves you very much. Go give it a hug.
